  2. They should find a seat they like, make name tents, fill the popsicle sticks with their names and keep voice down.

  3. Pick up the calendar and syllabus at the math station.

Welcome and Introduction (the class begins- 5 mins)

  • Welcome everyone to the first day of school and ask the students to take a few more minutes to finish the name tents and popsicle sticks and explain purposes of them.

  • Take attendance by collecting popsicle sticks.

  • Welcome everyone again and introduce yourself, such as educational background and family.

    • Hi! Everyone, my name is Nicky Wang, you can call me Mr. Wang. I just graduated from the University of Houston! Since it is my first-year teaching, I know we will learn and grow together! Math is my strongest subject and I hope I can help you to succeed on this subject. I understand that it could be hard or boring to you sometimes, but I promise I will give help anytime I can and make it easy and interesting to learn. I know we are going to know each other well, but first, I want to explain the syllabus, class rules and procedures.

  • Stress that I am very excited to be here and that I look forward to a successful year ahead.

Syllabus and Calendar Explanation (15 mins)

  • Ask the students to look at the Course Syllabus handout.

  • Explain the basic course information and calendar.

  • Discuss the course objectives and my expectations for students.

  • Identify the required class materials

  • Explain the grading scale.

  • Discuss specific academic requirements (school requirement, and STARR requirement)

  • Ask students to sing up a Gmail account for class-use purpose because all homework will be on Google Classroom.

  • Explain the concept of community and manager positions, then tell students to sign up the position they want on Google Drive.

  • Ask students to say together about the materials they need for the class.

  • Ask students if they have any questions about the calendar and syllabus.

Class Procedures (10 minutes)

  • Practice some procedures such as collecting homework and entering the classroom,

  • Explain that other procedures will be explained and rehearsed as they become necessary such as absences and make-up tests.

  • Ask students if they have any questions

Class Policies Explanation (10 minutes)

  • Explain the difference between procedures, and rules.

  • Show a video of how students make classroom rules together and write down some categories (academy, tardiness and so on) on the board

  • When the video finishes, ask students to discuss “what rule will be fit in each category” in a group

  • Set a timer for 3 minutes, I will randomly ask some students to give examples by the using the go-around cup

  • Stress that everyone should follow rules that are created by the whole class and they will be enforced consistently.

  • If time allowed, I will lead the discussion and give my own rules with appropriate rewards and consequence. Then I will ask the class if they agree or not. If not, students will make changes to the rules until everyone agrees.

  • If I don’t have enough time, I will leave this as homework for them that they need to create a list of rules and bring back the next day for discussion.

Dismissing the Class (5 minutes)

  • With a few minutes remaining, reiterate my excitement for the upcoming year and remind them of tasks they need to do- manager signups and a list of rules.

  • Ask students to fill out the student information survey as exit tickets

  • Collect them in the end and tell students that it was nice to meet all of them.

Artifacts

I will use the left-side example to write the letter to parents on the first school day. This letter can show my expectations for both parents and kids while I can build the positive relationship with parents since they are a crucial part of my classroom

This artifact is my calendar for the school year, I will circle the important day and write down the memos under each month.

I will hang this calendar next to the board so students can see it and learn to manage their time better for important events like tests.

I will use this survey on my first day for students to fill out. In this way, I can know students better and be able to create an individualized instruction to each student. Considering that some students are shy, I will make it private and let them be creative in the survey.

This artifact is an example of a suggestion box. Basically, students can write an anonymous letter about concerns and I will check the box every day.

I will introduce this on the first day so students can be familiar with the suggestion box and I can start to build the relationship with them early.
